AFSCME Council 40 is a growing union with a commitment to excellent worker representation. Originally charted in 1944, the Council now has approximately 32,000 members who work for local units of government and private sector nonprofit employers in Wisconsin, outside of Milwaukee County. The Council has at least one affiliated local union in each of the 71 counties under its jurisdiction, and comprises more than 300 local unions and chapters, which represent approximately 590 separate collective bargaining units. Council 40 is governed by a democratically elected 25-member executive board. The Council has 38 full-time employees, including 22 professional staff representatives located throughout the state, two research analysts, two organizers, a political action representative, and several administrative and support staff employees at its Madison, Wisconsin, headquarters

DUTIES: AFSCME Council 40 is currently seeking candidates for three Staff Representative positions who will service affiliated local unions. One position will be located in the Fond du Lac area, the second position will be located in South Central Wisconsin including bargaining units in Dane, Rock and other Counties and the third position will be located in the La Crosse area. The Staff Representative is the key union advocate responsible for all areas of collective bargaining, contract and local union administration for affiliates of Council 40. Job duties include negotiating labor contracts, handling grievances, organizing new unions, and representing local unions in interest and rights arbitration proceedings and other forms of litigation before the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission. REQUIREMENTS: The Council is seeking a proven labor leader with experience in all aspects of collective bargaining and contract administration. A degree in labor relations, economics, public administration, law, or a related field is preferred, but a substantial history of increasingly responsible experience in labor relations will be considered. Excellent analytical and communication skills are necessary. Considerable travel and evening work is required.

Salary and Benefits Package: The 2009 annual salary for this position after a July 1, 2009 increase ranges from $65,459 with incremental step increases to $99,585. Council 40 also offers an outstanding fringe benefit package, including comprehensive insurance benefits and participation in AFSCME's defined benefit pension plan.
