Executive Director, RI Council 94
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Rhode Island Council 94, AFL-CIO is currently seeking an Executive Director. The Executive Director serves at the pleasure of the Council 94 Executive Board. The Executive Director is responsible for implementing the policies of the council’s executive board in accordance with the mission and responsibilities of the council to represent and promote the welfare of its members.
DUTIES: The purpose of this position is to provide leadership, direction and administrative oversight for the day-to-day operations of the council which include but are not limited to: policy development, personnel management, strategic planning, budget development, contract negotiations, public relations, political/legislative and member education programs. This position is a highly visible one requiring extensive contact with the members, other labor organizations, coalition partners, the media, and federal, state and municipal elected officials. The Executive Director is required to devote full time to the position and works a non-standard work week including evenings and weekends when required. This position requires frequent travel within the state and some limited travel outside the state.
REQUIREMENTS:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. Advanced degrees or course work in labor management, economics, or law are desirable.
- A minimum of 10 to 15 years of high level union management, preferably in the public sector, that includes substantial experience in labor relations, contract negotiations and administration and staff management.
- Experience must also include previous direction of major union-based programs or activities such as internal and external organizing, legislative and political action and member education.
- Demonstrated skill in strategic, operational and budget planning is also required.
- Must exhibit high level of competence related to persuasive verbal and written communication skills.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in commonly used computer programs such as Microsoft Office applications.
