“He Understands What Is Needed”

Statement of AFSCME International President Gerald W. McEntee on President Obama's first speech to a joint session of Congress

“President Obama’s vow tonight to fix the country’s broken health care system demonstrates once again that he understands what is needed to get America on the road to recovery. We need to expand health care coverage and lower costs for families and businesses. The nation needs a health care system that puts people before profits and includes a public health insurance plan as an option in order to keep costs down, improve quality and encourage innovation. Working families stand ready to work with President Obama as he takes bold measures to address the nation’s health care crisis.”

AFSCME’s 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in hundreds of different occupations – from nurses to corrections officers, child care providers to sanitation workers – AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.
