Introduction
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in U.S. women.* It is also the second-leading cause of cancer death for all women (after lung cancer) and the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. As a result of earlier detection and improved treatment, however, breast cancer mortality rates are declining. Early detection and treatment of breast cancer also enhances the five-year survival rate for cancer patients.
* Men, in rare instances, also develop cancer in the area of the breast. Men should consult a health care professional if they notice any lumps or changes to their breasts or nipple discharge. Experts do not recommend routine screening exams for men.
