Learn About Workplace Resources

LEARN ABOUT WORKPLACE RESOURCES

Many AFSCME affiliates have negotiated programs and policies that respond to members' eldercare needs. Review your contract or check with your local union office to find out if such policies and programs are available at your workplace. These may include:

  • Alternative work schedules

    • Flextime

    • Compressed work week

    • Job sharing

    • Permanent part-time

  • Right to refuse overtime

  • Sick and personal leave

  • Family leave

  • Resource and referral programs

  • Telephone access

  • Seminars

  • Caregiving fairs

  • Support groups

  • Caregiving components in retirement planning seminars

  • Employee Assistance Programs

  • Financial assistance programs

    • Dependent Care Assistance Programs

    • Voucher programs

    • Vendor programs

You may also want to complete the Review of Policies Checklist, to determine what's already available at your workplace.

If the programs and policies you need are not yet available, talk to your local union to find out the extent to which these services may be needed by other members and how you can work with them to make your workplace more family-friendly. Part II of this booklet is a step-by-step guide to winning workplace programs.
