Union Plus Scholarship Winners AnnouncedAugust 5, 2009 ![]() Left: Thomas P. Joseph, Right: Valerie Pucilowski Four AFSCME members, and the children of 16 other members, are among the 133 winners of this year’s Union Plus Scholarship awards. AFSCME had the most winners of any union this year. Among the 12 top award winners nationally (recipients of $4,000 scholarships) are the children of two members of New York’s Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA)/AFSCME Local 1000: Thomas P. Joseph of Floral Park and Valerie Pucilowski of Briarcliff Manor. Joseph is the son of Valsamma Joseph, a developmental aide in Queens. He plans to become a financial analyst and start his own company. Pucilowski is the daughter of Ruthann Pisano, manager of web design in Westchester County’s information technology department. Union Plus winners this year received a total of $200,000 in scholarships. They were chosen from more than 4,200 applicants from more than 44 AFL-CIO unions, including 660 from AFSCME members, spouses and their dependent children. Union Plus scholarships are available to union members, spouses and dependent children who have been accepted into an accredited college or university, community college or recognized technical or trade school at the time the award is issued. Graduate school students are also eligible. Since the program began in 1991, Union Plus has awarded $2.8 million in educational funding to 1,813 union members, spouses and dependent children.
