GOP Leaders Look to Cut Health and Social Programs to Pay for New Tax CutsThis fall, Republican Congressional leaders embarked on a plan to cut domestic programs that serve low and middle-income families in order to pay for a new round of tax cuts for the wealthy. This Robin Hood in reverse plan includes specific cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, Food Stamps and loans to students to pay for college. In addition, the plan involves an across-the-board cut to all other domestic social programs including funding for Head Start, No Child Left Behind, law enforcement, job training, public health, mental health, substance abuse, and others. AFSCME has led a national coalition to fight spending and tax cuts and to urge Congress to get its priorities straight. As of this writing, action has not been completed on the spending legislation or on the tax cut bills. For up-to-date information, read AFSCME's Weekly Report. |
