Angelica Workers Need SupportLast month, hundreds of Angelica workers at plants in more than 20 cities began a coordinated campaign to fight for workers' rights at Angelica Corporation, parent company of Life Uniform. Life Uniform is the biggest retailer of nurse uniforms in the country, selling garments to nurses through its stores, catalog and Web site. About one-third of Angelica's workers are without the protection of a union contract and are combating a number of problems in their workplace, including dangerous working conditions, insufficient wages, and inaccessible health care. Workers are forced to work excessive overtime; factories have no emergency exits; and bosses underpay workers without explanation. Over 30 unfair labor practice charges have been filed against Angelica in the last year. UNITE is engaged in a labor dispute with Angelica. Non-union employees are seeking to organize a union with UNITE to secure safe conditions and fair treatment at work. Angelica has responded with a retaliatory and illegal anti-union campaign. AFSCME supports UNITE in this struggle. We urge AFSCME nurses to stand with their brothers and sisters at Angelica and boycott Life Uniform garments and scrubs until workers' rights are respected at Angelica.
