Bus Tour Recruits AFSCME Retirees
Three members of Ohio Retiree Chapter 1184 recently found themselves right in the middle of the presidential race when they agreed to take a week-long bus trip to stump for the Kerry-Edwards ticket.
Eileen Gallagher and Judith and Howard Van Kleef were among over 100 citizens from all age groups and all walks of life who came together for the Democratic National Committee's "America Can Do Better" road show. Participants joined the group at various stops throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The AFSCME retirees joined their bus in Cleveland.
Along the way, the riders held rallies and news conferences in local communities, offering personal stories about the failures of Bush Administration policies and explaining why they support John Kerry for president. The three-bus tour made its final stop in New York City, where the riders provided a sharp contrast to the Bush supporters gathering for the Republican National Convention.
Gallagher and the Van Kleefs said the bus trip was an unforgettable experience. "We met so many wonderful people," said Howard Van Kleef. "And we were all there for the same reason: our commitment to a brighter future for this country."
