Announcement Letter from President McEntee and Secretary-Treasurer Lucy
The 8th AFSCME ACU Congress will be held on September 5-7, 2007 in Washington, D.C. At the same time, AFSCME will hold a conference for sworn law enforcement officers. Each conference will have its own workshops and plenary sessions but corrections and law enforcement members will join together to lobby Congress. Among the issues we will lobby on is requiring all 50 states to provide collective bargaining rights for all police, firefighters, correctional officers and EMTs. These are unique opportunities for AFSCME members in corrections and in law enforcement to meet their brothers and sisters, share experiences and insights, deliver a strong message to their elected representatives and build this union into the biggest and boldest voice for the men and women who keep us safe. We hope to see you and many of your members there. Registration will be on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 from 12:00PM-4:00PM and on Thursday, September 6, 2007 from 7:00AM-10:00AM. Each conference will begin with a plenary session at 4:00PM on Wednesday which will be followed by a visit to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Thursday will be Lobby Day, with a joint plenary session and lobby preparation in the morning and lobbying on Capitol Hill in the afternoon. A Congressional reception will be held Thursday evening. Friday morning will feature a debrief on the Congressional visits and workshops on corrections and law enforcement issues. The programs will conclude by early afternoon. Separate registration/housing forms for the ACU Congress and the Law Enforcement Conference are enclosed. The cost of travel and lodging is the responsibility of the attendees. To reserve a room, the appropriate registration/housing form (ACU or Law Enforcement) must be returned to AFSCME Conference & Travel Services before the August 3, 2007 deadline. The Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill will not accept reservations directly. We have also reserved a limited block of rooms at a hotel near the Hyatt at a lower price. They are available on a first come/first serve basis. Those individuals who do not need lodging, still must register for the Congress and indicate on the form that room reservations are not needed. |
