Position Overview:
The Assistant Executive Director (AED) will assist the Executive Director (ED) in carrying out daily operations of the organization as directed by the Executive Director. The AED will provide professional leadership and offer best practices to ensure the organization is achieving its mission to ensure Alaska public employees receive good wages, fair treatment, and respect on the job. The AED will support staff and the membership by overseeing the organization’s activities. The AED will especially assist with internal and external organizing efforts and should be experienced and well versed in labor organizing best practices. The AED will help lead a vibrant Human Resources section to assist all ASEA staff and ensure that issues are handled and addressed promptly.

Duties:

  • Support and head the development of procedures as it relates to the daily affairs to facilitate the implementation of the programs and goals of ASEA
  • Establish a vibrant Human Resources section
  • Support the ED with the preparation of quarterly reports on ASEA Union activities to present to the Executive Board and General Membership at the December, February, May, and August meetings
  • Support the ED in setting an annual budget in conjunction with the ASEA Accountants, ASEA Treasurer and Executive Board members
  • The AED will be required to attend Executive Board and Membership meetings as delegated by the ED
  • Support the ED with both internal and external organization communications including drafting correspondence notifying AFSCME in writing when any collective bargaining negotiations and memorandums have been completed together with the number of employees covered and the expiration of the contract
  • Assist the organization in maintaining and growing membership levels
  • Assist and support lead staff on organizing, including setting internal and external organizing goals
  • Demonstrate the sustainability of this position by monitoring membership numbers to report toour executive board and AFSCME
  • Oversee all Executive Director duties and responsibilities in the event that the Executive Director is absent
  • Advise the Executive Director on operational decisions including on grievances, litigation, unfair labor practice suits, and other affairs
  • Perform other such duties as assigned by the Executive Director or required by the Executive

Requirements:

  • Law or master’s degree preferred; Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college required
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of labor organization’s (or similar) executive management experience in positions of increasing responsibility preferred
  • Background in labor advocacy, membership recruitment and collective bargaining
  • Experience working in a member-based association, reporting to and advising a board of directors
  • Experience in public policy, labor leadership, collective bargaining and social justice activism, especially as related to public employees
  • Experience working with Executive Boards and approved budgets for non-profit organizations
  • Experience developing and implementing organizing
  • Ability to set priorities, work under pressure, handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet established
  • Ability to work as an effective team
  • Must thrive in an environment with tight deadlines, changing priorities, high-pressure and irregular
  • Requires a high level of judgment and ability to take initiative and work
  • Ability to work with International and local union elected leaders and senior staff and navigate complex and sometimes politically sensitive
