This position is responsible for coordinating the media relations strategies for national and local priorities and national union principals. Also may serve as AFSCME’s liaison for media relations with coalition partners and national union campaigns.

DUTIES:

  • Oversees media strategy development, public message development, relations with media professionals, pitching, booking and media writing.
  • Develops media strategies for AFSCME’s national leaders and works with them to execute.  
  • Oversees the planning and development of the national union’s media strategy, including national and local priorities.
  • Serves as a liaison for media and communications campaigns in coalitions of which the union is a participant.
  • Advises and provides counsel to AFSCME departments and affiliates on media relations strategy.
  • Scans media for daily opportunities to lift up the union’s brand as well as members and officers.
  • Builds relationships with media professionals to keep them abreast of the union’s progress and priorities.
  • Drafts briefing documents, including talking points and Q&As for interview guidance, and preps officers, members, and staff as appropriate for media interviews.
  • Drafts media materials, including press statements, fact sheets and op-eds for major media campaigns and issues.
  • Responds to press inquiries and presents pitches for coverage of the union, its members and its officers.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission.
  • Ensures standards throughout communications campaigns and maintains an online clearinghouse of communications materials.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with course work in policy, organizing, communications, political science or liberal arts, with up to five years of relevant work experience in labor, political or community organizing and campaign communications or any combination of education and experience that would provide the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.

Skills:

  • Experience working with principals in a media relations capacity.
  • Advanced knowledge media relations and developing strategic communications plans.
  • An ability to manage and lead staff and conceptualize, plan and implement major programs and projects.
  • Advanced ability to develop a campaign message and enforce message discipline in fast-paced campaigns.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate vendors and consultants involved in campaign activities.
  • Ability to communicate in a foreign language is desirable.

Extended Hours and Travel:

  • Some travel and the ability to work extended hours required.
  • A valid driver’s license required.
