Organizer-in-Training (OIT)

AFSCME Organizers-in-Training participate in an intensive year-long program to learn the fundamentals of building worker power through union organizing. OITs come from diverse backgrounds of work, organizing and academic experience, and are placed on campaigns with experienced Lead Organizers who provide mentoring and one-on-one training throughout the program. OITs learn the nuts and bolts of an organizing campaign and build skills such as engaging with unorganized workers, organizing direct actions, and preparing for a first contract campaign. An OIT’s responsibilities increase as their training progresses.
