WHEREAS:
One of the actions taken at the Regional Political Conferences held in 1982 instructed AFSCME PEOPLE to set a fundraising goal of $1. 6 million for the 1984 elections; and
WHEREAS:
With the help of the many AFSCME Locals and Councils that have made enormous gains in PEOPLE fundraising, PEOPLE has raised more money for the 1984 elections than ever before; however PEOPLE is still $300,000 short of its goal; and
WHEREAS:
Any shortfall of this magnitude will seriously hurt AFSCME'S efforts to help elect candidates who support public employees, and to defeat anti-labor, anti-government politicians, particularly in the U. S. Senate, where anti-labor incumbents from several states are in marginal races; and
WHEREAS:
The ability of AFSCME PEOPLE to play an even greater role in politics and the formation of public policy in future years will depend on the increases in PEOPLE checkoff and other fundraising activities that occur this year.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That all AFSCME Councils and Locals will now increase their efforts to raise the money needed before Election Day 1984 to restore to our government the principles of fairness, compassion, peace and public service; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That the delegates to this convention will set the example by contributing generously to the PEOPLE program and by participating enthusiastically in all PEOPLE activities at the 1984 Convention and throughout the remainder of the year.
