WHEREAS:

The Reagan Administration and its right-wing allies have publicly questioned the legitimate role of government at all levels; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has been trying to help win the fight against assaults on public employees and public services through a nationwide radio and television advertising campaign designed to alert the general public to the vital services provided by AFSCME's members; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME's external communications efforts with the news media and with the general public help build support for public employees and for the vital public services that AFSCME members provide; and

WHEREAS:

Internal communications, including union newspapers, newsletters, and leaflets, help keep AFSCME members informed about the activities of their union and about issues of concern to public employees; and

WHEREAS:

The full range of communications, from leaflets to radio and television advertisements, helps to win organizing campaigns and to bring the benefits of AFSCME representation to public employees throughout the nation; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME is continually involved in negotiating fair and reasonable contracts and in organizing unorganized public employees.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That the International Union continue its national institutional advertising campaign as a vital way of communicating AFSCME's message to the American people; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue to use the media as an effective tool in reaching out to workers who will benefit by membership in this union.
