WHEREAS:
The Congress has not passed legislation affording equal rights to women; and
WHEREAS:
Women continue to earn less on the dollar than men; and
WHEREAS:
The only way for women to achieve full equality is for the Equal Rights Amendment to be made part of the U.S. Constitution; and
WHEREAS:
Women continue to make up a growing proportion of the workforce and a growing proportion of single heads of households; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME is a leading advocate for the rights of women and has pledged to intensify union efforts to eradicate sex discrimination.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That this 27th International Convention reaffirms AFSCME's vigorous and long-standing support for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and urges all local affiliates to include support of an unamended ERA as a key issue in their screening process for U.S. Senate and House candidates, as well as candidates for state legislative seats.
