WHEREAS:
AFSCME represents more than half a million women, has had an active women's program for more than 14 years, and leads the labor movement in its commitment to equality in the workplace; and
WHEREAS:
Women are now more than half of the membership in our union; and
WHEREAS:
Women in AFSCME historically as well as now, actively participate in the union as members and leaders, holding 46% of all leadership positions; and
WHEREAS:
Since 1978 the National Women's Advisory Committee has continued to meet and advise the International Union on how to encourage women's activities at the local and council levels, increase involvement of women in the union, and achieve recognition of women's efforts.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That this 27th International Convention supports continuation of the National Women's Advisory Committee to advise the International Union on issues of concern to women, with members appointed by the International President; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That Women's Committees continue to function, or be established, where appropriate, at the council and local levels; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That conferences and education programs emphasizing the needs of union women be encouraged at the state and local levels; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That since AFSCME members recognize that all members stand to gain from eradicating injustice, our union will continue to fight for an end to discrimination based on sex and to provide greater opportunities for working women.
