WHEREAS:

The AFL-CIO pre-primary presidential endorsement process of 1984 resulted in unprecedented political unity in the labor movement and the serious political involvement of many unions for the first time; and

WHEREAS:

It is vital to the interests of working men and women that organized labor play a full role in the all — important selection of the presidential nominee; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME members must have a voice in this important decision affecting their futures.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME urge the AFL-CIO to consider again pursuing a two-thirds pre-primary endorsement vote by the AFL-CIO General Board in 1988. AFSCME shall participate in this endorsement process after consulting its members.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That whether or not there is an endorsement, AFSCME should strongly encourage and support membership involvement in the primary and caucus process.
