Contract Protections for Gays and Lesbians

WHEREAS:

The 25th, 26th and 27th International Conventions have taken positions against the discrimination of people on the basis of sexual orientation; and

WHEREAS:

Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation continues in many areas of employment, discipline and even dismissal; and

WHEREAS:

It is the experience of the union that the rights of its members are most securely guaranteed when established in collective bargaining agreements; and

WHEREAS:

Language prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation has already been included in many AFSCME contracts to the benefit of all covered.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That it is the policy of this union to include such anti-discrimination language in AFSCME negotiated contracts; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That councils and the International Union should, and are urged to, include such language in contracts with staff employees.
