Organizing Spanish-speaking Workers

Resolution No. 143
28th International Convention
June 20-24, 1988
Los Angeles, CA

WHEREAS:

AFSCME recognizes the growing needs of our brothers and sisters who are Spanish-speaking workers and their inherent problems in an often "English only" workplace; and

WHEREAS:

Recent studies have revealed that wages, benefits and working conditions of unorganized Hispanic workers remain substantially below comparative unorganized white workers in the United States; and

WHEREAS:

Those same studies revealed that the economic status of unorganized Hispanic workers have improved only marginally, compared to unorganized white workers in the past decade; and

WHEREAS:

Unorganized Spanish-speaking workers struggle to attain meaningful employment and educational experiences for themselves and their children in their efforts to achieve equal opportunities in all areas of our society; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME is committed to achieving those goals for all workers.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME reach out to unorganized Hispanic workers throughout this nation in order that we may communicate our commitment to achieving their goals; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME set a high priority toward organizing the unorganized Spanish-speaking workers in this nation.
