National Policy on Employment

WHEREAS:

Full employment is vital to individual and societal physical, social and political well-being; and

WHEREAS:

Recent scientific studies conducted among areas of high unemployment in Great Britain and the United States have proven a high correlation between unemployment and mortality rates, substance abuse, divorce rates, crime and violence and mental illness among the employed and unemployed living in the affected geographic areas; and

WHEREAS:

The number of unemployed, underemployed and the working poor has been increasing at a rate unparalleled in the history of the United States.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME actively pursue efforts at the federal level to ensure that a national policy on employment be created, that long-range plans to implement such a policy be developed, and to monitor progress toward the achievement of the policy goals and objectives.
