WHEREAS:

Many public sector unions affiliated with the Public Service International (PSI) have formal youth structures to develop young workers for union leadership; and

WHEREAS:

These youth structures deal with unique issues facing a younger workforce; and

WHEREAS:

Organizing young workers is crucial to maintaining a vital, growing labor movement; and

WHEREAS:

Young workers often face unique problems early in their work lives relating to education, technological change, the changing role of the family and other social transformations; and

WHEREAS:

The Evolution of Work Report identifies the need to attract younger workers to the trade union movement.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That the 28th International Convention of AFSCME support the creation of an International Union Advisory Committee on Young and New Workers appointed by the International President; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That this committee be charged with the task of identifying issues of special concern to young and new workers and opportunities and programs to attract and inspire this segment of the working population.
