Increase the Minimum Wage

Resolution No. 19
28th International Convention
June 20-24, 1988
Los Angeles, CA

WHEREAS:

The federal minimum wage is $3.35 per hour and it has been over 10 years since Congress last passed legislation increasing the minimum wage for the nation's poorest workers; and

WHEREAS:

The minimum wage fell far behind increasing prices and wages and represents 36% of average hourly earnings; and

WHEREAS:

The current federal minimum wage allows workers to live below the poverty level and exploits women and blacks; and

WHEREAS:

84% of workers earning the minimum wage are adults and 26% are heads of household.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME take action to assist in the passage of federal legislation to increase the minimum wage to a fair and equitable level with provisions for annual adjustments to keep pace with the cost of living; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That AFSCME seek sufficient support in the Congress of the United States to override a Presidential veto.
