Visit of Nelson Mandela

Resolution No. 161
29th International Convention
June 25-29, 1990
Miami, FL

WHEREAS:

Our union and its leaders are being criticized from various quarters with regard to the approaching visit of Nelson Mandela; and

WHEREAS:

The response of our President to such criticism has been appropriate and effective; and

WHEREAS:

The President of the United States, the advocate of armed violence in Panama, has made public statements critical of Nelson Mandela's failure to reject the armed struggle of his people for freedom; and

WHEREAS:

It is now necessary to remove any doubt on this subject from the public mind.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That this union supports and approves of the actions of its leaders in bringing about the visit of Nelson Mandela to our convention; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That we, the delegates to this convention, are determined to welcome Nelson Mandela as a brother walking among us, and unconditionally to wish him success in casting off the oppression of his people.
