WHEREAS:
Fewer than 30 percent of American families fit the traditional definition of family-two parents living with children; and
WHEREAS:
Eligibility for fringe benefits related to sick leave, family responsibility leave, bereavement leave, and health care is often based upon a definition of family which fails to recognize changes in family composition, resulting in unequal coverage across families; and
WHEREAS:
These fringe benefits are on average equivalent to 40 percent of total compensation.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME locals and councils work to insure that fringe benefits are available to all members of an employee's household living as a family.
