WHEREAS:

The current system of electing the President of the United States relies solely on the number of Electoral College votes amassed by each candidate; and

WHEREAS:

It has been evident by past elections, that it is not always the individual who receives the majority of the popular vote who gets elected; and

WHEREAS:

The President of the United States is elected to serve all of the people of the United States; and

WHEREAS:

The voting public gets more and more disinterested in the process because they do not believe that their vote actually makes any difference in who gets elected.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That in order to restore faith in the process of electing our President and making sure that the President serves at the pleasure of the majority of the electorate, the Electoral College system for electing Presidents should be abolished; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) pursue the legislation necessary to abolish the Electoral College process for electing the President of the United States and develop a system whereby the President is elected by popular vote of the citizens of the United States.
