In Tribute to Ron Brown

32nd International Convention

Chicago, IL

WHEREAS:

The members and leadership of AFSCME enjoyed a long, close relationship with Ron Brown, not only in his capacity as a member of President Clinton's Cabinet, but also through his work with Senator Edward Kennedy, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the Urban League, and other progressive organizations, and

WHEREAS:

It has long been recognized that Ron Brown's energetic, creative and effective leadership of the Democratic National Committee was essential to the 1992 election of President Clinton, Vice President Gore and other pro-worker progressives; and

WHEREAS:

The tragic death of Ron Brown at age 54 while on a mission to promote economic development in the Balkans was a loss for every working American; and

WHEREAS:

The life and career of Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown stands as a tribute to both his commitment to excellence in public service and to social justice.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME recognize the many achievements and accomplishments of Ron Brown which have led to new opportunities and better lives for workers in the United States and throughout the world; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the delegates to the 32nd International Convention of AFSCME mourn the death of our friend and ally, Ron Brown; and all the government officials, business leaders, and military personnel who perished with him; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That AFSCME extends its sympathy to Alma Arrington Brown and the entire Brown family.
