Retirees: Raising the Food Stamp Allotment

Resolution No. 57
33rd International Convention
August 24-28, 1998
Honolulu, HI

WHEREAS:

In this fast paced and economically moving society, AFSCME retirees who are now drawing Social Security payments and pensions are finding it difficult to make ends meet as well as maintain an adequate food supply; and

WHEREAS:

It is even more difficult for those retirees who are not drawing pensions but are sustained with Social Security payments alone. The government, however, provides medical and food supplement assistance only if they meet eligibility requirements; and

WHEREAS:

Food Stamps to seniors should not be deemed a luxury, but a necessity. Some recipients of Social Security receive an allotment of food stamps with varying amounts usually in the range from $10-$25 monthly; and

WHEREAS:

This is an insult to the many union members who have worked so diligently to reach retirement only to find out that they can not afford to feed themselves. Additionally, many retirees take some form of medication. Many times they are forced to choose whether they are going to eat or take their medication.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME declare the importance of their commitment to members, not just to active members who are presently working, but to those who have worked tirelessly and deserve to be able to live, not just survive; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME support federal legislation implementing a program increasing food stamp allotments to at least $100 monthly.
