WHEREAS:
AFSCME International and NUHHCE/AFSCME Local 1199 and its affiliates made great progress in organizing home care workers in 2001, including the victory for 12,000 UDW home care workers in San Diego; and
WHEREAS:
Home care is a growing industry with hundreds of thousands of workers nationwide; and
WHEREAS:
Home care workers are generally low paid with few benefits; and
WHEREAS:
Home care workers provide an integral service to maintain hope and dignity for senior citizens and citizens with disabilities.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME fight for the extension of collective bargaining rights to home care workers and to eliminate the use of independent contractor status, which abuses home care worker rights and forces wages down; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME continue to devote organizing resources to organize home care workers.
