Eating Disorder Research (Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia)

WHEREAS:

This disorder is characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight; and

WHEREAS:

Ninety percent of anorexia sufferers are women and for every 200 women in the general population, one to six will be affected by anorexia; and

WHEREAS:

Reproduction and hormonal abnormalities, heart disease, and neurological problems are often a result of this disease; and

WHEREAS:

This disorder afflicts our children as young as 12 to 13 years old; and

WHEREAS:

Five to 18 percent of these affected women will die from this disorder; and

WHEREAS:

There are websites promoting and supporting this devastating disease.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME supports legislation for continued research and education about this disease.
