38th International Convention - San Francisco, CA (2008)

Re-Solidifying a Partnership within Combined Charitable Campaigns

Resolution No. 92
38th International Convention
Moscone West
July 28 - August 1, 2008
San Francisco, CA

WHEREAS:
As we face new challenges in our future, we must continue to combine old resources in better hopes for servicing and helping our AFSCME sisters and brothers, our local communities, states and global nations; and

WHEREAS:
We must use this time as an opportunity for our own International and local unions to re-forge a true workable partnership with the various leaders that are running combined charitable campaigns that are established under the laws in 38 states within the United States; and

WHEREAS:
As public employees, our work is about servicing people.  We can no-longer look at combined charities as support for only our communities. Through this partnership, our support has also become a service for our union members that have lost jobs, are facing disability without any reasonable source of income, lost their home due floods or fire, or are facing catastrophic events; and

WHEREAS:
In some cases, organizations that have received our support have attempted to thwart union activities in their workplace, or have in turn funded other organizations that oppose their employees’ right to organize.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That the International officers and delegates at this International Convention return to your individual states and recommit to re-establishing a true partnership between labor and community service organizations like the United Way and other federated partners; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
In the spirit of partnership, community service organizations, and any organizations that they fund, should respect the right of their employees to organize. Labor should not support organizations that oppose employees’ organizing efforts or support the privatization of public services; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
Without this true partnership, our communities’ base support will be depleted and our ability to support our members will be negatively affected; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That the AFSCME International officers and convention delegates develop a platform that shows the willingness of this union to support and work with any governmental entity in developing a true partnership that will support community-based charitable giving to organizations like the United Way and other federated partners.
