Organizing in Tough Economic Times – Now More Than Ever

Resolution No. 64
39th International Convention
Boston Covention & Exhibition Center
June 28 - July 2, 2010
Boston, MA

WHEREAS:

Under the leadership of President Obama, the U.S. economy is struggling to regain its strength and move past the disastrous policies of the Bush administration; and

WHEREAS:
American workers are still struggling to find or keep jobs, hold on to their homes and otherwise survive economically; and

WHEREAS:
Public service workers now face furloughs, pay cuts, benefit cuts and layoffs; and

WHEREAS:
Expanding the ranks of our union is critical to building our power; and

WHEREAS:
The economic crisis has already resulted in a decline in membership for most private sector unions and threatens to also weaken AFSCME; and

WHEREAS:
Workers need union representation now more than ever; and

WHEREAS:
American workers are afforded fewer rights and less protection than the citizens of any other industrialized nation.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME recommit our dedication to organizing to bring new members into our ranks at every level of the union and, in so doing, strengthen our membership and protect us from further attacks.
