HONORING THE MEMORY OF CCPT MINNESOTA CHILD CARE UNION ACTIVIST AND FOUNDING MEMBER DELOIS BROWN

Resolution No. 80 Los Angeles Convention Center June 18 – 22, 2012 Los Angeles, CA

WHEREAS:

DeLois Brown was a family child care member of CCPT Minnesota Local 3400; and

WHEREAS:

DeLois Brown worked tirelessly to organize her CCPT union from 2005 until her untimely death in 2012, because she believed in the mission to advance professionalism in the family child care field and the strength of solidarity; and

WHEREAS:

DeLois Brown was an advocate for her family child care profession; and

WHEREAS:

DeLois Brown was committed to the Minnesota CCPT’s vision of “Taking Charge of Our Future” by serving on the founding convention steering committee and would have gone forward with the local by serving as an activist, organizer and leader, and by continuing to share her passion, vision and many talents for organizing and motivating her fellow members; and

WHEREAS:

DeLois Brown was well-loved, highly- respected and adored by her fellow CCPT members, her family and neighbors, the families she served and the hundreds of children whose lives she impacted through her work in family and group child care, her church and her union; and

WHEREAS:

DeLois Brown was tragically taken from those people due to her untimely and sudden death while on the job in her family child care program, Visions and Butterflies Child Care.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That the delegates to this 40th Convention of the membership of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees honor the life and service of Sister Brown; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That Minnesota CCPT Local 3400 receive from the International Union a copy of the adopted resolution to give to the family of Sister DeLois Brown; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That Sister Brown’s name shall be added to the list of our fellow AFSCME union members who have given their lives in the line of duty and in service of the public.
