WHEREAS:
AFSCME is the largest public employee union in America and the largest union in the AFL-CIO; and
WHEREAS:
American working people and public employees are under attack and are suffering a loss of rights, benefits and compensation; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME is leading a resurgence of activism through our “AFSCME Strong” campaign and other internal organizing campaigns; and
WHEREAS:
Working people and our unions are stronger when we are united in a common effort to improve our lives and our communities; and
WHEREAS:
The affiliation of independent unions and employee associations into AFSCME has been an important part of our history and growth and has improved the lives and working conditions of hundreds of thousands of members. In recent years, a number of employee associations and independent unions have chosen to affiliate with AFSCME.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME will continue to prioritize the affiliation of independent public service unions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME at the International, Council and Local union levels will develop relationships with independent unions and educate members and leaders of these independent unions about the strength and democratic operation of our union and the mutual advantages of affiliation.
