WHEREAS:
The availability of decent, affordable housing lags far behind the demand for it and is an issue that affects moderate as well as low income people; and,
WHEREAS:
The housing crisis severely impacts families who must currently rely on temporary shelter or have no shelter at all, and on those who are mentally and physically disabled; and,
WHEREAS:
AFSCME has historically worked for legislation that would help workers, economically disadvantaged and disabled people to improve their quality of life; and,
WHEREAS:
There is an urgent need to publicize the mounting problem faced by Americans in obtaining housing and to call attention to pending legislation that would revitalize the national housing policy; and,
WHEREAS:
AFSCME, along with the AFL-CIO and its affiliate unions, has joined a coalition of 50 other organizations to plan a demonstration in Washington, D.C. in support of decent, affordable housing and an end to homelessness.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME endorses the "Housing Now March on Washington" and pledges full participation in the October 7 march.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That the International Executive Board calls on all councils and local unions to support this event to strengthen the demonstration at the nation's Capitol and to support national housing legislation that would ensure decent and affordable housing for all.
