Labor Council for Latin American Advancement

International Executive Board, 1985

WHEREAS:

The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) was established by the AFL-CIO in 1973 to promote participation of workers of Latin descent, and their families, in all phases of the union movement and the nation's political processes; and,

WHEREAS:

LCLAA is the first organization of Latino workers to achieve effective nation-wide scope and is the only national organization of Latino unionists which has the official endorsement and support of the AFL-CIO; and,

WHEREAS:

AFSCME members of Latin descent have through the years participated in LCLAA, helping build the organization and serving on its national Executive Board; and,

WHEREAS:

The increasing significance of LCLAA in voter registration and other activities in the Sunshine belt and elsewhere demonstrates that even greater participation by AFSCME is appropriate in view of the role of the Latino women and men in AFSCME and AFSCME's organizing activities.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

The International Executive Board endorses LCLAA and its programs and objectives, and pledges support to the continued growth and expansion of LCLAA's activities throughout the United States; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT:

The International Executive Board commends AFSCME leaders and members who have worked to help build LCLAA and who have served in its leadership; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

The International Executive Board calls on affiliated AFSCME Councils and Locals to bring to the attention of AFSCME members the existence and activities of LCLAA in order to provide support and leadership to the organization; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT:

The International Executive Board urges AFSCME members to participate fully in LCLAA local and chapter activities and in the National Conferences in order to assure that the Latino membership of AFSCME is properly recognized and represented in LCLAA.
