Martin Luther King holiday in Arizona

International Executive Board, 1989

WHEREAS:

The International Executive Board adopted a resolution on December 2, 1986 calling on then Governor Evan Mecham not to rescind the King Holiday in Arizona; and

WHEREAS:

Governor Mecham did rescind the holiday in January 1987. This and other actions resulted in a successful drive for a recall election, which proved to be unnecessary since he was impeached by the Arizona House of Representatives and convicted by the Arizona State Senate; and

WHEREAS:

The struggle continues to pass Martin Luther King Holiday legislation in Arizona, with AFSCME in the forefront of that effort. The Arizona House has approved the measure, shifting attention to the State Senate where passage is expected to be difficult; and

WHEREAS:

Arizona AFSCME members are re-doubling their efforts in the State Senate, taking inspiration from Dr. King's legacy of hope and firm determination.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That the International Executive Board applauds the action of the Arizona House of Representatives in approving Martin Luther King holiday legislation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the International Executive Board respectfully urges the Arizona State Senate to pass the King holiday bill, sending it to Governor Rose Mofford for her signature, and thereby bringing Arizona into the company of 44 other states that have honored this great American.
