WHEREAS, The Washington Federation of State Employees, AFSCME Council 28, survived an intensive 11-month raiding campaign waged by the Teamsters union against our 3,000 members in 13 state correctional institutions; and
WHEREAS, AFSCME's financial and staff support helped turn the tide in our favor and played a major role in beating back the Teamster challenge; and
WHEREAS, AFSCME's assistance built up the union at each institution in the months following our first-round victory over the Teamsters, while the Teamsters resorted to delay tactics and finally withdrew; and
WHEREAS, Council 28 members and staff recognize and appreciate AFSCME International staff's healthy infusion of new energy, fresh ideas and solid organizing into the campaign.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Council 28, W. F. S. E., extend its thanks and appreciation to AFSCME International Vice-President Don McKee, International Staff and rank and file members from other states for all their assistance throughout the campaign and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Council 28 extend special thanks to Tom King, Director of Field Services, for his help and assistance in developing and carrying out the entire campaign and,
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that Council 28 extend a special thanks to President McEntee and Secretary-Treasurer Lucy for the care and commitment given to us in beating back the Teamster challenge. The leadership given by President McEntee and Secretary-Treasurer Lucy continues to be the greatest asset of this union.
