The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles have devastated parts of that city, destroying tens of thousands of homes, killing dozens of people, and upending countless lives.
Yet as AFSCME members in Los Angeles have experienced unimaginable destruction, they continue to serve their communities, putting others first even while they face incredible personal losses.
Some examples of AFSCME heroism include:
Local 119 members who work for the Los Angeles County Auto Equipment and Repair division, have been servicing LA County Fire Department’s heavy equipment, including the lifesaving fire engines and fire helicopters that have been critical to containing the fires.
The members of Local 858, who serve the City of Pasadena as maintenance workers, water treatment operators, inspectors, and more, have been helping to clear the debris from the fires.
Their local president, Pedro Ibarra, said, “Our community was hit hard by fires and strong winds, which destroyed many homes, including those of some of our union members. We’re working tirelessly on the front lines to ensure the safety of Pasadena and Altadena residents.”
Ibarra added: “With the help of city workers and volunteers, we’re focused on cleaning up and restoring our neighborhoods. Pasadena is a vibrant community, and we’re committed to bringing it back to its beautiful, welcoming best.”
Local 3090 members – LA police dispatchers – have been working around the clock to connect citizens with critical emergency services.
The Parks and Recreation Department workers, members of Local 901 and 741, have been helping provide shelter to fire victims at recreation centers throughout Los Angeles.
The dedicated health care workers of UNAC/UHCP have treated Angelenos who have suffered physical injuries from the fires.
AFSCME NOW will continue to provide coverage of what our members are experiencing during this ongoing natural disaster.
