35,000. That’s the number of additional public service workers who have had their student loans forgiven in the Biden-Harris administration’s most recent round of loan forgiveness. It’s the result of fixes the administration made to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
That brings the total number of borrowers who’ve had their college loans forgiven through the PSLF program during the Biden-Harris administration to 946,000, totaling $69.2 billion.
Before the Biden-Harris administration overhauled the program, just 7,000 people had seen their PSLF loans forgiven.
AFSCME has fought alongside the Biden-Harris administration to repair the program, which encourages public service work with the promise that recipients will have the balance of their federal direct student loans forgiven after they make repayments for 10 years.
There’s more.
$168.5 billion. That’s the total amount of student loan forgiveness that the Biden-Harris administration has delivered, including through the PSLF program.
4.76 million borrowers. That’s how many Americans have benefitted from the Biden-Harris administration’s fight to ease the crush of student loan debt.
Last April, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met with AFSCME members who have benefited from the administration’s efforts to fix the student loan crisis.
If Donald Trump wins a second presidential term, the progress public service workers have made in easing their college debt burden is in dire jeopardy. Trump’s Project 2025 would eliminate the PSLF program and inflict other pain on public service workers.
