For years, billionaire CEOs and corporate special interests have rigged the system to amass wealth and power for themselves at the expense of working people. Those same special interests are now backing the upcoming Supreme Court case, Janus vs. AFSCME Council 31, which threatens to make things even worse by taking away the ability of working people to come together in strong unions.

Working families have had enough.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1,300 sanitation workers who went on strike in Memphis, Tennessee, 50 years ago organized, marched and spoke up to defend basic freedoms – freedoms that are under attack to this day.

On Saturday – two days before oral arguments in the Janus case – tens of thousands of people across the country will once again gather to defend their freedoms during the “Working People’s Day of Action.” Activists, religious leaders, union members, public service workers and others will unite with one voice to protest the rigged economy and political system.

To oppose continuing attacks on working people, families, women and minorities, thousands of people will march together in a series of events being coordinated by Jobs With Justice. Cities hosting Day of Action rallies include San Diego; Memphis; Washington, D.C.; Miami; Chicago; Detroit; St. Paul, Minnesota; New York; Columbus, Ohio; and Philadelphia.    

“My friends and neighbors are working harder than ever, but too many of us are still struggling to get ahead,” said Jeana Campolo, a therapeutic program aide and AFSCME OCSEA member in Ohio. “Standing together on February 24 is just as important as it was 50 years ago. Together we can win dignity, a decent living and make our voices heard.”

Coast to coast, working people like Campolo will march arm in arm with leaders from Color of Change, NextGen America, United We Dream, 350.org, Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, VoteVets, Greenpeace, the Poor People’s Campaign, NARAL Pro-Choice America, NAACP, the New York Immigration Coalition and MomsRising, as well as AFSCME, American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association, Service Employees International Union, AFL-CIO and other national organizations.

Omar Salaam, a sanitation worker and AFSCME District Council 33 member in Philadelphia, said he’ll be marching Saturday because “someone has to continue the fight for equality.”

“This is our chance to demand respect for all working people and stand up to the corporate bullies who undermine our hard work every day,” he said.
