On The Record: I AM 2018
Today, the nation celebrates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In addition to being a storied civil rights hero, he was a fearless champion for the rights and freedoms of all working people. It was on a labor campaign – a strike of 1,300 AFSCME sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee – that Dr. King was assassinated. Fifty years later, we celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and the Memphis sanitation workers, and continue the fight for racial and economic justice, with an initiative called I AM 2018.
