Right-wing members of Congress are gearing up to punish working people who rely on food stamps to feed themselves and their families. But you can stop them.
President Donald Trump and his allies in Congress have put in place a wasteful new tax law that will add $1.5 trillion to the deficit and give massive tax breaks to the wealthy and corporate CEOs at the expense of working people.
To pay for that law, a right-wing bill coming up for a vote in the House of Representatives proposes cutting $17 billion in nutrition support over 10 years to needy working families, senior citizens and children.
These proposed cuts are part of H.R. 2, the farm bill, which the House is scheduled to vote on soon.
If H.R. 2 becomes law, more than 1 million households – more than 2 million people – would lose benefits or see severe benefit reductions under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, AFSCME said in a letter to Capitol Hill lawmakers last month.
H.R. 2 would also impose harsh new work requirements on SNAP recipients – many of whom already work hard – increase burdensome paperwork and eliminate flexibility states now have.
Tens of thousands of eligibility specialists and other staff in SNAP agencies around the country are working to prevent SNAP cuts. These people have joined together under AFSCME to serve their communities in states including Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois and New York. Additionally, some AFSCME members and their families are SNAP recipients.
Send a strong message to right-wing lawmakers that it’s not OK to finance tax breaks to those who have plenty of resources by taking away nutrition assistance from people who have next to nothing.
