In a hard-fought victory for working people, UNITE HERE says it has reached agreements with Trump Hotels in Las Vegas and Washington, DC.
The Local Joint Executive Board Las Vegas, UNITE HERE Culinary Workers Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165 announced what will be the first-ever contract covering food and beverage workers at the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas. Under the contract, which will be in effect from Jan. 1, 2017, through May 31, 2021, workers will get yearly wage increases, pensions, family health care and job security.
Earlier this year, UNITE HERE called for a national boycott of Trump hotels after management hired a “union avoidance” firm that was said to have intimidated workers trying to organize with the Culinary Workers Union. Thousands of AFSCME members rallied outside the Trump Las Vegas hotel last July in solidarity with the hotel workers. The day after we rallied with Culinary Workers Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165, Trump agreed to pay a federal settlement for retaliating against workers at his Las Vegas hotel who voted to join a union.
UNITE HERE Local 25 and Trump International Hotel Washington, DC, said they’ve agreed to allow an organizing campaign for workers at the facility, which is close to the White House. AFSCME and other union members, in solidarity with the Culinary Union, have picketed Trump’s hotel in the nation’s capital in the historic Old Post Office building.
