WASHINGTON — AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued the following statement mourning the passing of civil rights icon Rev. Joseph Lowery:
“The world has lost a passionate fighter for social and economic justice in the passing of civil rights icon Rev. Joseph Lowery. AFSCME shared Rev. Lowery’s commitment to dignity for all workers - including striking sanitation workers in Memphis, TN, in 1968 - during his time as an aide to Dr. King and as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Rev. Lowery and his legacy will never be forgotten.”
