AFSCME praises Biden nomination of Jennifer Sung to serve on the federal bench
Saunders: ‘Through this historic nomination and others, the President continues to live up to his promise to promote diversity and protect and expand the rights and freedoms of all working people’
WASHINGTON — AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued the following statement praising the Biden Administration’s nomination of Jennifer Sung to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Sung, a labor lawyer with a distinguished background in workers’ rights law and a former union organizer, would also be the first Asian American judge from Oregon on the Ninth Circuit.
“Jennifer Sung comes from the labor movement. As a former organizer, she understands the challenges working families face to make ends meet. And throughout her impressive legal career both advocating for workers’ rights and serving as an impartial adjudicator on the Oregon Employment Relations Board, she has demonstrated that she will ensure everyone, not just the wealthy and privileged, receives the equal justice they deserve.
“Through this historic nomination and others, the President continues to live up to his promise to promote diversity and protect and expand the rights and freedoms of all working people, including the freedom to join a union. We hope that this is just the first of many highly qualified labor lawyers the President will nominate to the federal courts. This administration has shown that it takes seriously its commitment to strengthen the judiciary by quickly filling vacancies with fair-minded judges that come from the diverse communities they serve. We thank Senators Wyden and Merkley for being strong advocates alongside the administration to support qualified and standout candidates like Jennifer Sung.”
