AFSCME’s Saunders: We will continue the fight ‘so that every American’s voice is heard in our democracy’
WASHINGTON — AFSCME President Lee Saunders released the following statement after the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act failed to advance in the U.S. Senate:
“The late John Lewis marched 50 miles from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, not once but twice, for the right to vote – nearly losing his life along the way. But a minority of senators won’t even vote to consider the bill that carries his name and honors his legacy, a bill that would restore the Voting Rights Act protections so many sacrificed so much for. We will continue the fight – getting in ‘good and necessary trouble’ – so that every American’s voice is heard in our democracy, no matter their race, background, economic status or zip code.”
