Saunders hails confirmation of Julie Su, ‘a seasoned leader…with a passion for helping our most vulnerable workers’

WASHINGTON — AFSCME President Lee Saunders released the following statement on the Senate confirmation of Julie Su to be the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor:

“Julie Su is a seasoned leader with a long history of empowering working people and helping them access the tools they need to thrive. Having served as labor commissioner for the largest state in the nation, she has exactly the experience and background necessary to help lead the U.S. Department of Labor at such a pivotal moment.

“From paid leave to unemployment insurance to occupational safety to job training to wage theft and more, Su has dealt with all the most pressing issues confronting the labor department. She is also a longtime ally of the labor movement, with a fearless commitment to civil rights and a passion for helping our most vulnerable workers achieve dignity and fairness on the job.

“Julie Su and Marty Walsh will make a tremendous team. On behalf of 1.4 million AFSCME members, I congratulate Deputy Secretary Su and look forward to working with her in the years ahead.”
