Saunders: Liz Shuler and Fred Redmond ‘have dedicated their lives to the fight for working people and are ready for the challenges ahead’
WASHINGTON — AFSCME President Lee Saunders released the following statement on the election of Liz Shuler as AFL-CIO President and Fred Redmond as AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer:
“This is a historic day for the labor movement, as Liz Shuler becomes the first woman ever to lead the AFL-CIO, and Fred Redmond becomes the first African American Secretary-Treasurer of the federation. On behalf of 1.4 million AFSCME members, I was proud today to vote for Liz and Fred. Both these leaders have dedicated their lives to the fight for working people and are ready for the challenges ahead. From the PRO Act to voting rights to infrastructure and a lot more, we have a full agenda. I have complete confidence in this leadership team’s ability to seize this moment, build on the legacy of Rich Trumka and make bold progress for working families.”
