AFSCME President Saunders Statement on the Passing of Kent Wong

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Kent Wong, a beloved leader, teacher, and ally whose lifelong passion for justice strengthened the entire labor movement.

Through his visionary leadership of the UCLA Labor Center, Kent educated and empowered a generation of organizers, including many AFSCME members. Together with Rev. James Lawson, his teachings on nonviolence and social justice stand as enduring pillars of our movement. Kent understood that our fight for economic justice is inseparable from the fight for racial equality and the dignity of all working people.

Kent’s passing is a profound loss, but his spirit and vision live on in the labor movement. We will take this moment to recommit ourselves to the work he championed – to organize, to educate, and to fight until every worker is respected, protected, and paid what they deserve.

AFSCME’s 1.4 million members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in communities across the nation, serving in hundreds of different occupations — from nurses to corrections officers, child care providers to sanitation workers — AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and freedom and opportunity for all working families.
